dfield and pplane are matlab programs written by John Polking. They are
useful for visualization of solutions of the first and second order ordinary
differential equations: dfield5 plots direction fields for single, first
order ODEs, and allows the user to plot solution curves;
pplane plots vector fields for planar autonomous systems.
These programs are available for downlowding at
John Polking's webpage .
You will need to choose an appropriate
version of Matlab from the list. Download dfileld and place it in your
working directory. Then run matlab. In matlab type 'dfield6' (for version 6)
and press 'Enter'. In the dfield window: type in the formula for the differential
equation and specify ranges for x and t. After that click on 'Proceed'.
If everything is right you will see a new window showing the slope field for
a given differential equation.
