In quantum mechanics, the uncertainty principle is perceived as a not very good thing

(maybe except for Heisenberg, who got a Nobel Prize by discovering it - a good thing).

I will discuss results which show how uncertainty principles can be exploited to obtain

sparse representations of signals.
